pawpaw Farming
THE RED ROYALE
PAWPAWS are a type of fruit that belong to the cactus group of plants. They are also known as papayas or epapali in Luganda. Pawpaws are widely grown and consumed in Uganda, where they provide a source of vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants. There are different kinds of pawpaws, but one of the most popular and improved varieties is the red royale.
The RED ROYALE pawpaw is a hybrid variety that produces smooth, pear-shaped fruits with a deep red flesh and a sweet flavor. The fruits are large, weighing up to 2 kg each, and have a long shelf life. The red royale pawpaw is also resistant to diseases and pests, and can tolerate drought and high temperatures. The red royale pawpaw can yield up to 80 fruits per tree per year, making it a profitable crop for farmers.
One of the leading nurseries and landscaping companies in Uganda that specializes in pawpaws is CLOVER-GREEN Nurseries & Landscaping Ug. This company was founded by K. Samuel, a passionate gardener and author who has over 15 years of experience in the field. CLOVER-GREEN offers quality pawpaw seedlings, including the RED ROYALE variety, as well as other services such as landscaping, irrigation, pest control, and training. OTHER PAWPAW VARIETIES IN UGANDA
Some other varieties of pawpaws are:
Sunflower: This variety produces large, yellow fruits with a mild flavor and few seeds. It is a self-fertile variety, meaning it does not need another pawpaw to pollinate it.
Taylor: This variety produces medium-sized, greenish-yellow fruits with a sweet and rich flavor. It is also self-fertile and has good disease resistance.
Taytwo: This variety is a cross between Taylor and Sunflower. It produces large, yellow fruits with a creamy texture and a pineapple-like flavor. It is also self-fertile and has good cold tolerance.
Mary Foos Johnson: This variety produces medium-sized, green fruits with a yellow flesh and a spicy flavor. It is a late-ripening variety that requires cross-pollination from another pawpaw.
Mitchel: This variety produces small, green fruits with a yellow flesh and a mild flavor. It is an early-ripening variety that requires cross-pollination from another pawpaw.
Davis: This variety produces large, green fruits with a yellow flesh and a sweet flavor. It is a mid-season ripening variety that requires cross-pollination from another pawpaw.
Rebeccas Gold: This variety produces large, yellow fruits with a red flesh and a tropical flavor. It is a late-ripening variety that requires cross-pollination from another pawpaw.
HOW PROFITABLE IS PAWPAW FARMING IN UGANDA
Pawpaw is a widely grown and consumed fruit in Uganda, that provides vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants. It can also be used to make fruit salads, drinks, jam, jelly, marmalade, candies, and crystallised fruits.
Pawpaw grows best in warm areas with adequate rainfall and well-drained loamy soils with a pH of 6-7. It can produce 12-16 tons per acre per year under good management conditions.
Some of the popular and improved varieties of pawpaw are sunrise, red royale, red lady, victoria red, malkia F1 and cavity special. These varieties have desirable traits like early maturity, good yield, disease resistance, and sweet flavor.
According to my work experience in pawpaw Farming and plantation setup,
To grow an acre of pawpaws, a farmer needs between 500-700 seedlings, which cost about sh1,000,000-sh1,400,000. (@2000) The planting should be done at a spacing of 3m by 3m, resulting in 450
Or 3m by 2m, resulting into 680 plants per acre. The plants should be fertilized with NPK and CAN, and weeded regularly.
Pawpaw can be intercropped with other crops like beans and pumpkin to increase income and soil fertility.
A pawpaw farmer can earn about sh10m to sh25m in profit per acre in a year when the crop is properly managed.
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF PAWPAW FARMING IN UGANDA
Some of the challenges of pawpaw farming in Uganda are:
Diseases and pests: Pawpaws are susceptible to various diseases and pests that can reduce the quality and quantity of the fruits. Some of the common diseases are anthracnose, powdery mildew, papaya ring spot virus, and mosaic virus.
Some of the common pests are fruit flies, mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. To control these diseases and pests, farmers need to use resistant varieties, practice crop rotation, apply fungicides and insecticides, and remove infected plants and burn them.
Water stress: Pawpaws need adequate water for optimal growth and fruiting. However, some areas in Uganda may experience drought or irregular rainfall that can affect the water availability for the crop. Water stress can cause wilting, leaf drop, fruit drop, and reduced yield. To cope with water stress, farmers need to use mulching, irrigation, water harvesting, and water conservation practices so that they ensure water security.
Poor post-harvest handling: Pawpaws are highly perishable fruits that need proper handling after harvest to prevent spoilage and loss of quality. However, some farmers may lack the facilities and skills to handle the fruits properly. Poor post-harvest handling can result in bruising, cracking, rotting, and fungal infections of the fruits. To improve post-harvest handling, farmers need to use clean and padded containers, avoid overloading and rough handling, sort and grade the fruits according to size and ripeness, store the fruits in cool and dry places, and transport the fruits to the market as soon as possible.

Market fluctuations: Pawpaws are a seasonal crop that may face fluctuations in supply and demand in the market. This can affect the prices and profitability of the crop for the farmers. Sometimes, the supply may exceed the demand, leading to low prices and wastage of the fruits. Sometimes, the demand may exceed the supply, leading to high prices and scarcity of the fruits. To deal with market fluctuations, farmers need to diversify their products, form cooperatives or associations, negotiate with buyers or processors, add value to their fruits by processing them into other products like jam or juice, and adopt improved varieties that can extend the harvest season or produce off-season.

PESTS AND DISEASES AFFECTING PAWPAW
some of the pests and diseases that affect pawpaw in Uganda are:
Fungal diseases: These are caused by fungi that infect the leaves, stems, roots, or fruits of the pawpaw. Some of the common fungal diseases are anthracnose, powdery mildew, stem rot, and root rot. Anthracnose causes dark brown spots on the leaves and fruits, which may crack and ooze.
Powdery mildew causes white powdery growth on the leaves and fruits, which may reduce photosynthesis and yield.
Stem rot causes the stem to decay and collapse, leading to plant death.
Root rot causes the roots to rot and become soft, leading to wilting and stunting of the plant.
Bacterial diseases: These are caused by bacteria that infect the leaves, stems, or fruits of the pawpaw. Some of the common bacterial diseases are bacterial spot, bacterial canker, and bacterial wilt. Bacterial spot causes small water-soaked spots on the leaves and fruits, which may coalesce and form blisters. Bacterial canker causes sunken lesions on the stem and fruits, which may ooze gum or sap. Bacterial wilt causes the leaves to wilt and turn yellow or brown, leading to plant death.
Viral diseases: These are caused by viruses that infect the cells of the pawpaw and interfere with its normal functions. Some of the common viral diseases are papaya ring spot virus (PRSV), papaya leaf curl virus (PLCV), and papaya mosaic virus (PMV). PRSV causes rings or spots on the leaves and fruits, which may distort and reduce their size and quality. PLCV causes the leaves to curl and twist, reducing photosynthesis and yield. PMV causes mosaic patterns on the leaves and fruits, which may reduce their color and flavor.
Oomycete diseases: These are caused by oomycetes, which are fungus-like organisms that infect the roots or stems of the pawpaw. Some of the common oomycete diseases are Phytophthora blight and Pythium root rot. Phytophthora blight causes dark brown lesions on the stem and fruits, which may girdle and kill the plant. Pythium root rot causes the roots to rot and become brown or black, leading to wilting and stunting of the plant.

Insect pests: These are insects that feed on or damage the leaves, stems, roots, or fruits of the pawpaw. Some of the common insect pests are fruit flies, mealybugs, aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, thrips, scales, caterpillars, borers, and beetles.
Fruit flies lay eggs inside the fruits, which hatch into maggots that feed on the flesh and cause rotting.
Mealybugs suck sap from the leaves and stems, causing curling and yellowing. Aphids suck sap from the leaves and stems, causing distortion and wilting.
Spider mites suck sap from the leaves and cause webbing and discoloration.
Whiteflies suck sap from the leaves and cause yellowing and stunting.
Thrips scrape or pierce the leaves and fruits, causing silvering or scarring.
Scales suck sap from the stems and fruits, causing honeydew secretion and sooty mold growth.
Caterpillars chew holes in the leaves and fruits, causing defoliation and damage.
Borers tunnel into the stem or fruits, causing weakening and rotting.
Beetles chew holes in the roots or fruits, causing injury and infection.

CURATIVE MEASURES:
These are the actions you can take to control or manage the existing pests or diseases in your pawpaw farm. Some of them are:
Use biological control agents, such as natural enemies or predators, to reduce the population of pests or diseases. For example, you can use parasitic wasps to control fruit flies, ladybugs to control aphids, or Trichoderma fungi to control root rot.
Use cultural control methods , such as hand-picking, trapping, baiting, or bagging, to remove or kill the pests or diseases manually. For example, you can use yellow sticky traps to catch fruit flies, pheromone traps to lure male papaya ring spot virus vectors, or paper bags to protect the fruits from sunburn or insects.
For the above method click me
Use physical control methods, such as heat treatment, solarization, flaming, or hot water treatment, to kill or sterilize the pests or diseases. For example, you can use hot water treatment to disinfect the seeds before planting, solarization to heat up the soil before planting, or flaming to burn off the weeds around the plants.
Use chemical control methods , such as pesticides, fungicides, insecticides, or nematicides, to spray or apply on the plants or soil to kill or repel the pests or diseases. For example, you can use copper-based fungicides to control anthracnose, neem oil to control mealybugs, or nematicides to control nematodes. However, you should use chemical control methods as a last resort and follow the label instructions carefully. Avoid using chemicals that may harm beneficial insects or pollinators. Also, avoid spraying chemicals during flowering or fruiting stages.
I hope this helps you keep your pawpaw farm healthy and productive. If you need more information or assistance on pawpaw farming in Uganda, you can visit the
